Clarksville Feasibility Study

Exploring whether new historical discoveries can help transform how Clarksville and Montgomery County understand, present, and build upon their Native American history.

Purpose

The Clarksville Feasibility Study was developed by the Sovereign Routes Foundation to evaluate whether the discoveries identified through its research can meaningfully reshape how Clarksville and Montgomery County understand, present, and build upon their Native American history.

Rather than beginning with predetermined conclusions, the study examines whether a more complete understanding of the region's Native American historical continuity can create meaningful opportunities for the community.

Why Clarksville and Montgomery County?

Clarksville and Montgomery County offer an exceptional opportunity to evaluate these discoveries because of the remarkable continuity of Native American history preserved throughout the region. Few places contain such a dense concentration of interconnected cultural sites within a relatively small radius.

The reasons Clarksville and Montgomery County were selected as the Foundation's first feasibility study are presented on the Why Clarksville page.

The Foundation's Role

The Sovereign Routes Foundation serves as the research and interpretive organization conducting the Clarksville Feasibility Study.

Its responsibility is to identify, organize, evaluate, and present the historical discoveries that form the basis of this study while exploring whether those discoveries have practical value for Clarksville and Montgomery County.

The Foundation does not determine the community's future. Its role is to provide a structured feasibility study that community leaders, institutions, educators, and organizations may evaluate for themselves.

Community Opportunity Assessment

The study explores whether these historical discoveries create new opportunities for Clarksville and Montgomery County.

These opportunities may include strengthening public understanding, enriching historical interpretation, supporting heritage tourism, encouraging educational initiatives, and contributing to the community's long-term cultural identity.

Historical & Interpretive Viability

The study evaluates whether the discoveries can be organized into a coherent historical framework that allows people to experience Native American history as an interconnected landscape rather than as isolated places, events, and moments in time.

Community Value & Long-Term Potential

The study examines whether these discoveries have lasting value beyond historical research.

It considers whether a broader understanding of Native American historical continuity can contribute to future educational, cultural, interpretive, tourism, and community initiatives throughout Clarksville and Montgomery County.

Institutional & Community Alignment

The study considers whether the discoveries can support the work already being performed by museums, historical organizations, educators, tourism organizations, community leaders, and other institutions committed to preserving and presenting the history of Clarksville and Montgomery County.

What the Study Is Evaluating

The Clarksville Feasibility Study evaluates whether the discoveries identified by the Sovereign Routes Foundation can be responsibly developed into an interpretive framework that benefits Clarksville and Montgomery County.

It explores whether these discoveries can strengthen public understanding, encourage broader historical interpretation, support community engagement, and create opportunities that have not previously been considered.

The findings of this study will help determine whether the Foundation should advance beyond the feasibility stage into future phases of development.
